The “Salvatesta Peak” or rock of Novara di Sicilia is high 1340 m.slm; defined “Cervino of the Sicily” he is approachable by means of a stradella pedestrian that begins from road Mandrazzi the saddleback (state road 185). The laborious climb, necessary in order to reach the summit, is compensated by the breathtaking panorama that is enjoyed from lassù: from the Etna until the Aeolian islands. Characteristics of this place are “to neviere” or “it was of the snow”, constituted from great holes dug in the land, very wide and deep that during the winter period was filled up of snow to use in the summery season for the preparation of ice creams and the cooling of foods and drinks. These great graves of collection, many of which still existing, they were found to the feet of the “Salvatesta Rock” and of the “Rock Lion”, this last one along with the first constitutes an only solid of Dolomite composition. The assigned men “the nivaò” to the conservation of the snow in these enormous holes, collected the snow in the outskirtses and the compattavano covering it from layers of ferns and earth for being then captured in the summery season. |
