The Convent of the Friars Cappuccino of Francavilla di Sicilia was constructed around the year 1546 graces to a conspicuous sum lavished from the viscount Antonio Balsam, with the free labor of the inhabitants of the place and increased from offers of people. The intense activities of the convent lasted approximately thirty years and some reporter indicates like final date of construction year 1570. At the beginning of the 1600 Friars Cappuccino they increased of number and therefore he has provided himself to a first widening. In the 1674 viscount Giacomo Ruffo he indicated in its testament the obligation to supply to another widening and, particularly, to the construction of a great room that had to be used after library, (today transferred to Messina). In 1886 as a result of the law that suppressed all the religious orders, the convent was confiscated and yielded to the Municipality of Francavilla di Sicilia and, some decade after, put up for auction; it was repurchased afterwards by the friar Giambattista Zullo. It followed a period of pr0sperity in the first twenty-year period of the 1900's and the successive forfeiture due to the two world wars. The convent of the Cappuccino of Francavilla di Sicilia has remained intact, cured and directed from father Concept the Judge, passed away in date 24/04/2004, that it has known to hand on a precious good for the Valley of the Alcantara. Today it is possible to visit the Convent of the Cappuccino thanks to the constant engagement of Mr. Salvatore Maugeri. |

Still on for the river and here is what the other Convent appears, by now only ruins: The Basiliano Nunnery of the SS. Savior of Placa “to batiazza”, founded from Saint Cremete in 1092 then destroyed from the earthquake of 1693. |
